NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) spotlights Black cinema with a selection of short films from Black filmmakers, along with a selection of local and international independent films.
The evening begins with American Bistro, director Arthur Diennet’s feature debut. This uplifting and funny film follows an uncle and nephew whose lives haven’t turned out as they had each hoped, who unite to open a restaurant in Los Angeles.
The night continues with powerful shorts program Other Lives, which offers a glimpse into alternate lives, including those that are imaginary, transcendent, forced upon us, or belonging to others.
The program concludes with the InFocus: Black Cinema shorts program, a selection of films depicting black experiences stretching from comedic to surreal, thought-provoking to heartfelt.
