NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its January Monthly Film Festival, spotlighting fighting ageism with InFocus: Counter-Ageism program, along with a selection of short film highlights from its ongoing program, as well as Xaque Gruber’s debut feature Sallywood.
The day starts with January Shorts, a collection of outstanding comedic, supernatural, dramatic and documentary work that delves deep into the ways we connect and conflict with one another, creatively, politically, across borders, cultures and generations and within our own neighborhoods.
The evening continues InFocus: Counter-Ageism, a collection of films that feature aging protagonists, narratives that challenge stereotypes about age and filmmakers whose work challenges those same stereotypes. This program shows its protagonists seizing life, celebrating their bonds, navigating life transitions, working through intergenerational trauma, and navigating a world with pointed rules about aging while embracing their passions.
The night concludes with Sallywood, the first feature film by writer-director Xaque Gruber. It’s a heart-warming comedy based on a true story about a young actor coming to Hollywood and forging a friendship with his favorite actress, Sally Kirkland, played by Kirkland herself.
“I hope my story with Sally touches audiences with its message of how, with true friendship, there can be a path to success – no matter at what age,” says Gruber.
NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year, across both our general and InFocus programming. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects for consideration for upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the schedule for InFocus programming, which celebrates diversity, inclusion and region by spotlighting communities of filmmakers within our filmmaking community as part of our monthly program. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
The South Park Center is an ADA compliant venue and is wheelchair accessible. We request captioned films from all filmmakers participating at our Festival. For any accessibility needs, please send a request to info@nfmla.org at least 72 hours prior to the event.
