Monthly Film Festival

April 19, 2025 02:30pm PDT - 10:00pm PDT

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its April Monthly Film Festival, which features its annual InFocus: Asian Cinema program and InFocus: Immigration programs. The day also includes the Los Angeles premiere of Laramie Dennis’s narrative feature Where In the Hell.

Day begins with InFocus: Immigration, a collection of films that tell stories of immigration, emigration, immigration policy and activism. From navigating two cultures simultaneously, to culture shock, to contemplation of places left behind, places aspired to, the harsh realities of a new perspective and processing generational trauma, to the lengths, both dire and heroic, that people go to for safety and stability.

The day continues with InFocus: Asian Cinema, a program that spotlights Asian-American talent and storytelling in front of and behind the camera. This collection covers themes of family dynamics, dating pitfalls, fitting in, vulnerability, perseverance and standing up to fight for a brighter future.

The night concludes with the Los Angeles premiere of narrative feature Where In the Hell, writer-director Laramie Dennis’s debut feature. A buddy roadtrip “traumedy” about the journey of a prop master whose trip with her girlfriend is interrupted and a struggling actor on his way to an audition, the film brings heart and groundedness to existential turmoil.

NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year, across both our general and InFocus programming. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects for consideration for upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the schedule for InFocus programming, which celebrates representation by spotlighting various communities of filmmakers as part of the NFMLA Monthly Film Festival. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The South Park Center is an ADA compliant venue and is wheelchair accessible. We request captioned films from all filmmakers participating at our Festival. For any accessibility needs, please send a request to info@nfmla.org at least 72 hours prior to the event.
