NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its October line-up, featuring its annual InFocus: Veteran Cinema program. The weekend’s programming also includes an exciting collection of Fall Shorts, which include a selection of work from McMinnville Short Film Festival, as well as the North American premiere of director Ray Izad-Mehr’s feature narrative Guillotine.
Saturday’s programming begins with Fall Shorts, a collection of shorts presented as part of NFMLA’s ongoing monthly program. The block opens with a sampling of films from this year’s McMinnville Short Film Festival (MSFF). MSFF is held annually each February in McMinnville, Oregon, is internationally recognized and focuses on a diverse range of narrative topics and voices, while raising visibility for local Willamette Valley and Pacific Northwest based filmmakers and striving to increase the collaborative dialogue between creative peers in an easily accessible cultural event. The block as a whole covers a spectrum of genres and stories of mistaken identity, blackmail, body horror, fetishization, mental health, family relationships, public service and gentrification.
The afternoon’s programming continues with the North American premiere of director Ray Izad-Mehr’s feature debut, Guillotine. This gory, clever, fast-paced horror comedy tells the historic tale of the guillotine through five dynamic and stylistically diverse vignettes.
The evening concludes with InFocus: Veteran Cinema Shorts, which spotlights the talent of military veterans in front of and behind the camera in a program that digs into serious topics in thoughtful and novel ways through vignettes, intimate portraits, fantasy and science fiction.
NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year, across both our general and InFocus programming. All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects for consideration for upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the schedule for InFocus programming, which celebrates diversity, inclusion and region by spotlighting communities of filmmakers within our filmmaking community as part of our monthly program. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The South Park Center is an ADA compliant venue and is wheelchair accessible. We request captioned films from all filmmakers participating at our Festival. For any accessibility needs, please send a request to info@nfmla.org at least 72 hours prior to the event.
