NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) hosts its November Monthly Film Festival powered by Seed&Spark. This program is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). The month’s line-up includes highlights from indigenous filmmakers from around the world with an InFocus: Indigenous Cinema program, a collection of youth-made films in community partnership with Kids in the Spotlight, international shorts program ‘Mortal Bodies,’ and Los Angeles local thriller Blinders by director Tyler Savage.
The morning begins with the Youth Showcase, a special program presented in community partnership with Kids in the Spotlight which offers a selection of films that were written or directed by middle and high-school aged filmmakers. From a science fiction tale on a distant world to a classic noir to stories of life-shattering events, this program speaks to the talent and perspectives of the next generation of filmmakers.
The afternoon continues with InFocus: Indigenous Cinema Shorts, which offers a collection of short films from Indigenous filmmakers and about Indigenous communities that explore questions of identity, sexuality, cultural preservation and revival and more, playing with narrative throughout a mixture of genres and forms.
Next in the evening in shorts program ‘Mortal Bodies,’ a line-up of films that each interact with the idea of living in a physical, mortal body in a unique way. From a pair of cousins dealing with the consequences of a death in the family, to a boy with Cochlear implants navigating the pursuit of his love of dancing with his deaf mother’s lack of understanding to the story of a reaper and a dying teenage girl, to a champion bull rider in the aftermath of a career-ending injury.
The night concludes with Tyler Savage’s tense and truly modern thriller Blinders, which follows a recent transplant to Los Angeles as he has a series of increasingly concerning interactions with an unstable ride-share driver.
All filmmakers are welcome and encouraged to submit their projects which will be considered for all upcoming NFMLA Festivals, regardless of the InFocus programming, which celebrates diversity, inclusion and region. NFMLA showcases films by filmmakers of all backgrounds throughout the year.
