Gwyneth Horder-Payton studied film at San Francisco State, but left school to be a Production Assistant on a TV pilot. She worked her way up to become a First Assistant Director and got her first directing break on The Shield, which she’s been an Assistant Director for since its pilot. She has gone on to direct Battlestar Gallactica, The Killing, Fringe, Sons of Anarchy, Torchwood, Once Upon a Time, Tyrant, Feud, American Horror Story, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, 9-1-1, Pose, The Politician and many more. Shondaland recognized Gwyenth as one of the top “10 Female Directors Shaking Up the TV Landscape.”
Our Moderator for this interview is NFMLA Board Member Varda Bar-Kar, director of the feature music documentary Big Voice (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu) and the upcoming documentary Fandango at the Wall. Varda participated in the Half Foundation Program and was mentored by Gwyneth prior to directing for Ryan Murphy’s hit Fox Show 9-1-1.
Varda’s discussion with Gwyneth will focus on her rise to being one of the busiest TV directors of our time. She will share her approach to television directing from the moment she receives the script to the delivery of her director’s cut. She will also discuss the most significant challenges she has faced and how she overcame them. As part of Ryan Murphy’s Half Foundation, Gwyenth has mentored a number of emerging directors of diverse backgrounds, some of whom have risen to prominence. Participants will be invited to ask Gwyneth questions and leave comments during this engaging discussion about television directing.
