NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) presents a full and exciting day with InFocus: International Animation, a selection of California Shorts presented in partnership with Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS) and The California Film Commission as well as two feature film presentations: William Conlin’s Making Apes: The Artists Who Changed Film and Alex Wolff’s feature directorial debut, The Cat and the Moon.
The afternoon begins with Making Apes: The Artists Who Changed Film, director William Conlin’s delightful documentary lens on the make-up artists behind Planet of the Apes (1968), and includes interviews with multiple Academy Award Winners Rick Baker, Ve Neill and Greg Cannom, along with many other notable creators. The film is produced by Hollywood makeup legends Thomas Burman and Bari Dreiband-Burman. This screening is proudly supported by Local 706 IATSE Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.
The program continues with California Shorts, which showcases a selection of short films produced throughout California’s diverse filming terrain, including one of the award-winning films from our community partner, San Diego Film Week’s 2019 line-up.
Next, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy a wide-array of animation from around the globe in addition to NFMLA’s monthly spotlight series, InFocus: International Animation, showcasing new animation from rising animators hailing from the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.
The night closes with the world premiere of The Cat and the Moon, the first feature film by award-winning actor, Alex Wolff (Hereditary), which explores the life of a teen (played by Wolff) temporarily living in New York during an uncertain time.
The NFMLA Monthly Film Festival is supported by venue sponsor South Park Center, Executive Circle sponsors FilmLA and HBO and Foundation Supporters CA Arts Council, LA City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), LA County Arts Commission and The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). This month’s program also includes support from Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz and Community Collaborator The Alliance for Women Film Composers (AWFC).
