NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) begins its 2019 slate with InFocus: Anti-Ageism, highlighting stories whose perspective offers us the world through the lens of ageing characters and subjects. InFocus: Anti-Ageism is the first shorts program of the night, and features a selection of local and international shorts whose protagonists are grappling with ageing, living in its wisdom, and defying its societal expectations (with style!).
The night continues with Shorts Program #2, a mix of strange, playful and dark stories. Featured in this program are the aesthetically rich tale of two widows of the same man who form an unlikely bond, the exploration of a long-ago conspiracy theory about a baseball player presented through an experimental documentary, the journey of a corgi trying his best, the blending of the natural and supernatural the night that a man decides to kill his wife, the quiet contemplation of a girl’s internal struggle reflected by her job applying pesticides, and closing it is a story of the power of idealization and obsession through the eyes of a former TV star.
The evening concludes with the World Premiere of feature film Myra by Christopher Baiza, a fast-paced and complicated tale of love and betrayal shared during a police interrogation by a transgender Mexican-American girl as she lives it. The program opens with Lisa Donato’s short film Foxy Trot, which comedically captures one lesbian couple’s experience of having their relationship tested by a ballroom dance class.
